by QQ 13. September 2008 00:27

Beijing Olympics is coming

by QQ 12. July 2008 23:31

Beijing Olympics is coming very soon, yes, the Olympics of every Chinese. And, really truly, I sense the Olympics is coming.

1 year ago: Olympics commercial ads started flooding in all medias. Yao Ming, Liu Xiang, and other Olympic champions show up in different ads everywhere.

6 months ago: we heard a rumor from a student that the government was asking foreigners go back to their country, because of Olympic. Dunno why though.

a few months ago: The rumor became true when we tried to help a student renew his visa to China. It’s very difficult to renew a visa in China, usually they are asked to go back to their country, the closest place they can go might be HK. A Turkey student studying Chinese in Fudan university told us they were asked to leave China. He volunteered to help Chinese government host the Turkish team as a way around to stay in China.

now: I understand why. It seems like our country is threatened by terroristsjust check out what's on shanghaidaily:

- City's airports beef up security, on the double
- Bomb scare shuts Beijing subway station
- Bullets found on Xinjiang passenger
- Police grab passenger with 100 detonators

And to “ensure a safe Olympics”, I have to get used to police dogs in subway station (they really scared me), 4 policemen standing in a row on the street on my way home. I used to believe Shanghai/China was the safest place in the world. We had no terrorists, no bombs, no private owned guns, … however, with the coming Olympics, not any more...

Sexy Beijing - a sexy perspective on China

by QQ 10. May 2008 00:04

My colleague sent me a movie on youtube, it's a series called "Sexy Beijing" made by foreigners, I guess, have been living in Beijing for a quite long time.

My first impression was it's hilarious 'coz it looks just like a parody of "sex and city". Then it turns out to be something more sophisticated than just funny. I would like to say the makers have very sharp sense of culture, also, what's in the movie is quite real. Maybe it doesn't present opinions of all the classes in China, but definitely a big part of people living in a big city. A good thing is it doesn't exaggerate / focus on those "bad things" in China, as other foreigners try to do, it's a objectively mirror of a modern China from an interesting perspective. Love it.

Middle-aged x'mas

by QQ 24. December 2007 17:47
It's Dec 24th, 2007, I didn't realize it's x'mas eve until one of my staffs said merry x'mas when leaving. Though it's not an official holiday in China, x'mas is becoming a big deal. On my way home, I saw a few couples dating, also several guys holding flowers waiting for their girl friends. A fleet of excited young people passed by, going to some party I guess. Still "young" as I am, what I really want in this gloomy and cold night is to watch some movie in warm house and eating junk food. Actually that's exactly how my husband and I spent the night --- went to super market for daily grocers then movie after dinner. We were thinking to have a romatic x'mas night before our daughter is born 'coz probably it's the last chance (not forever, but in the coming a few years at least), however both of us felt lazy after work and it ended up with Will Smiths and junk snacks. Eventually we went to bed at 1am, full, feeling fat and satisfied.
